Willie Wesley Averett, 90, of McGehee, AR passed away Thursday, December 14, 2017. Mr. Averett was born December 11, 1927 in Desha County, AR to the late George Washington Averett and Minnie Agnes Stuntson Averett. He was a cattle farmer. Mr. Averett served in the United States Army National Guard. He was a member of the Desha County Fair Board for over 30 years and the Livestock Barn at the McGehee Fairgrounds was named after him. Mr. Averett enjoyed showing cattle, goats, sheep and livestock to the children at the fair. He loved spending time with his family, friends and church family. Mr. Averett was a member of Tillar Baptist Church.
Other than his parents, he is preceded in death by his eight siblings. Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Velma Bishop Averett of McGehee, AR; sons, Doyle Averett of McGehee, AR and Damon Averett of McGehee, AR; daughter, Dolores “Dee” Hennington and her husband, Ray of Lake Village, AR; 7 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 1-2pm Monday, December 18, 2017 at Griffin-Culpepper Funeral Service in McGehee, AR. Funeral Services will follow at 2:00pm at the funeral home with Rev. Jerry Starnes officiating. Burial will follow at Tillar Cemetery.
