Obituary

Gilmer "Redd" Whittington, 81, of Eudora, Arkansas passed on to his eternal home on Thursday, May 16, 2019 and is now in the presence of his Lord, Master and Savior. Gilmer was born in Eudora, Arkansas on March 10, 1938 to the late James A. and Epsy McCullough Whittington. He was a graduate of Eudora High School, and he married Martha Ann Mardis in 1959. Gilmer was a cattleman through and through, working as cowboy for over 63 years. As a boy, he started working as a hand at the sale barn and eventually owned and operated Eudora Livestock Auction with his two sons. During this time and even afterwards, Gilmer traveled all over the ArkLaMiss working cattle and was known as a local "vet" because he was trained by Doc Bilberry early on in his life. Anyone who knew Gilmer knows he dearly loved hard work and instilled that same work ethic into his family and those who worked for him over the years. Other than working, Gilmer loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He also enjoyed singing at church; he was a member at Lakeside Baptist Church in Lake Providence, Louisiana. Gilmer was a giving, selfless man who left a legacy ingrained into an innumerable amount of people.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Wray Whittington; brothers, Robert Whittington and Alva Whittington; sisters, Daisy Whittington, Alice Berry and Thelma Chambers; adopted son, David Prince. Survivors include his wife, Martha Whittington of Eudora, AR; his son, Bryan (Lori) Whittington of Oak Grove, LA; adopted sons, Dale McBride and George Yelvington; brother, James “Sonny” (Julia) Whittington of Bastrop, LA; sisters, Ruby Hopkins of Jacksonville, FL, Epsie Sugg of Sherwood, AR, Georgia Ball of Hot Springs, AR, Polly (Billy) Landers of Jonesboro, AR and Vicki (Jim) Childers of West Monroe, LA; grandchildren, Logan (Clark) Strange and Lara Beth (Justin) Harper; great-grandchildren, Eliza Strange, Brooks Strange, Viviana Harper and Georgia Kate Harper. .

Visitation will be held from 2:00-3:00pm on Sunday, May 19, 2019 at Eudora Baptist Church in Eudora, AR. Funeral services will follow at 3:00pm at the church with Brother Mark Brown officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Carmel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lakeside Baptist Church Missions, 1194 Schneider Lane, Lake Providence, LA 71254.
Arrangements made by Griffin-Culpepper Funeral Service in Eudora, AR. Online guest book may be signed at www.griffinculpepper.com

I will always remember what a great man Mr Gilmer was and that he was a God-fearing man that saw his boys were raised in the church. One of my favorite memories is of him singing in the choir at New Hope Baptist Church in Eudora,AR and keeping time with the music with his hymnal. Bryan , Lori,Logan, Lara Beth and Ms.Martha, my thoughts and prayers are with you, love y'all,
Sheila Breedlove Cook

Gilmer was like a second father to me & I loved him deeply. It seems like yesterday he was either in the store or we were working cows together. Now, all your health problems are over & you can rest my dear cowboy friend at the biggest roundup ever...heaven. Always in our thoughts & prayers, Jimmy Overton & Vicki Mitchell
