Shorty worked for my family for many years when I was a child and I remember him as a kind and gentle soul who always greeted you with a smile. He was the type of person who would lend a helping hand to anyone in need. I remember Shorty making me a tote sac swing in the backyard tree, driving me downtown Lake Village to the “dime store” when my mother wouldn’t. A funny story my mother would tell was when I was about 10 years old, I got mad at her, packed my suitcase full of clothes and my favorite records and announced I was going to Dermott to live with my Grandmama. She looked at me and asked, “How are you going to get there?” I said, Shorty! Needless to say, that didn’t happen.
Shorty also had a “green thumb” and planted a beautiful garden with the prettiest tomatoes. He put a lot of work into that garden and it paid off.
Years later while I was in Dermott, after my grandmother passed away and I was getting out of my car, I heard someone yell ““Miss Melinda”, I turned around and it was Shorty! I couldn’t believe he recognized me, but I gave him a big bear hug and remember how happy I was to see him. That was the last time I saw him, but I’m grateful to have had that wonderful moment.
Without a doubt, there is a special place in heaven for men like Washington “Shorty” Humphrey. Rest In Peace dear friend.

I remember Shorty from when I was a young girl. He was always so nice and friendly. He loved everybody and was always willing to help in any way he could. I’ll see him in heaven someday.
