Lawrence Alfred Owyoung, 84, of Dermott, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, January 17, 2021, at Baptist Hospital in Little Rock. He was reunited with his wife of 61 years, Mable. Larry was born in Los Angeles, California, May 12, 1936. He was the son of Dung Wah Owyang. He was a meat butcher at The Palace in Marysville when he met the love of his life, Mable. They soon married and moved to San Jose, where he was a civil engineer. In 1969, he moved his family to Dermott to run the family grocery store, Y.L. Tow & Co. From 1975 through 1998, he owned Trade Winds Restaurant in McGehee. He was a talented chef and enjoyed serving customers his famous Chinese meals. Customers would return as friends time after time requesting their favorite dish from Larry. After retiring from the restaurant business, Larry became a founding volunteer at the Clinton Presidential Library in 2004. He met people from all over the world, and he took a genuine interest in their stories. Larry never met a stranger. He greeted everyone with a warming smile and a funny joke, but the conversation of food was his favorite topic. Larry was a true joy to all, whether he was making one of their favorite dishes or talking about the latest sports games. Everyone felt truly loved in his presence. Larry was a member of the Dermott United Methodist Church. His hobbies were golf, cooking for family and friends, and visiting friends from near and far. His children, grandchildren and his great-grand children were the center of his heart. He loved to spend time with them, take pictures and watch videos of them and send them to family in California. He is preceded in death by wife, Mable Suen Owyoung and his father, Dung Wah Owyang. He leaves behind his children Jeffery Owyoung (Sallie) of McGehee, Russell Owyoung (fur daughter, Skye) of Little Rock, Stephanie Bierbaum (Jon) of Lake Village; his sister and brother in laws, May Lim of Marysville, California; Mary Gee, Sunnyvale, California, Judy Toguchi, Honolulu, Hawaii; Ming Suen, San Francisco, California; and Dr. James Suen, Little Rock, Arkansas; his grandchildren and great grandchildren Kent and Jessi Owyoung; Chase, Paisley, Ellis and Charlotte Owyoung; Ross Owyoung; Mary Ashleigh, Zac, Helen Frances Harper; Maddison, Owen, Margaret Bruton. Graveside services will be Saturday, January 23, at 11 am, at the Dermott Cemetery. Pallbearers are Kent Owyoung, Chase Owyoung, Ross Owyoung, Owen Bruton, Zac Harper, Chip Greenwood, and Brian Hardin.
