Obituary for Flora Belle Smith Stepherson-Hemingway
Flora Belle Smith Stepherson Hemingway, 94 of McGehee, AR went to be with the Lord on May 11, 2021. She was born February 10, 1927 in McGehee. Flora Belle was preceded in death by her mother Hazel Hampton Cantrell, father Ray Smith and wonderful step-father who raised her Thomas Cantrell. As well as her parents Flora Belle was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years Berlin “Steve” Stepherson and then later in life by a wonderful second husband, Milton “Hot” Hemingway.
In 1945 Flora Belle fabricated her age so that she could enlist in the Waves to do her part to support the USA in WWII. This was typical of her outgoing spirit. If a job needed done, she was ready. Flora Belle worked for Buren Sharpe Building Materials until she retired. Flora Belle was affectionately known as Gran to everyone who knew her and spent her spare time and most of her days in her beloved sewing room. Gran was known for her French handsewing as well as making dance costumes, wedding dresses, prom dresses or just about anything else that she set her mind to. Whenever something needed fixed Gran was the “go to” person.
Gran loved to visit with anyone who would listen and loved the Lord with her whole heart. Flora Belle was life long member of First Baptist Church in McGehee and sang in the choir for many years.
Flora Belle is survived by her son, Tommy (Sandy) Stepherson of Little Rock and daughter Marjorie (Chuck) Day of McGehee; 4 Grand daughters, Camille (Aaron) Keller of Little Rock, Courtney (Danny) Ditmanson of Farmington, Mallory (Michael) Hyatt of McGehee, Sarah (Schantz) Red and 9 Great-grandchildren, Kemp and Cameron Keller, Dayne and Anna Belle Ditmanson, Hazel and Henry Hyatt, Steven, Whitleigh, and Avery Red.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 Thursday, May 13, 2021, at Griffin-Culpepper Funeral Service in McGehee, AR. Funeral Service will be held at the McGehee First Baptist Church Friday, May 14, 2021 at 10:30 with Bro. David Brown and Bro. Rick Miller officiating. Burial will be held at the McGehee Cemetery.
Pallbearers include Aaron Keller, Danny Ditmanson, Michael Hyatt, Schantz Red, Stephen Day, Dustin Day, Kemp Keller, Cameron Keller, and Dayne Ditmanson.
