Obituary for Desmond Herb Greene, III

Desmond Herb Greene III, born August 28, 1937, the loving husband of the late JoAnn Greene passed away Saturday, March 19, 2022, in Memphis, TN surrounded by his family. Funeral services are set for Thursday, March 24, at 2PM at Dermott Baptist Church in Dermott, AR. Minister Charles Graham will officiate the service. Interment will follow at Collins Cemetery. Herb, as he was best known to his family and friends, was one of two children born to the late Desmond and Ethel Greene in Bluefield, WV. Herb was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps (1954-1961). His military service carried him to many places. After marrying JoAnn, he began his life in Dermott, where they both lived for 54 years. He was a staunch supporter of the Dermott community having owned his own business there for more than a decade. Herb was a photographer, a pilot, a salesman, a farmer, a cattle rancher, an entrepreneur, an avid runner (but later walker because his short legs finally got tired), and even made his own soap that only he would ever use. Even JoAnn didn’t trust his chemistry skills. He also knew a little bit about absolutely everything and if you didn’t believe him, all you had to do was ask him or ask his daughter Donna. Herb is survived by his daughter Donna Hill of Corsicana, TX, his son Darrell Greene of Collierville, TN, and one sibling, Christopher Thomas Greene of Birmingham, AL. He had four grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, and many nieces and nephews. The pall bearers for the service: Kim Ellington, Lamar Reynolds, Jonathan Reynolds, Tyler Reynolds, Michael Edward, Tony Yee, and Peter Yee. The family will receive friends from 1-2PM preceding the funeral services, which will be brief because everyone knows Herb hated when services went too long. As he famously once said, “The heart can absorb only what the butt can endure.” In lieu of flowers, kindly donate to either JDRF at jdrf.org or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at stjude.org
